COATING SYSTEM
Lacquers and Coatings had been in vogue for the last 100 years for internal and external protection of metal cans for foods, beverage and other product packs.
Interior Lacquer and Coatings provide protection to metallic cans from aggressive pack and at the same time protect the contents from metal contamination. Exterior coatings of the can provide protection against external corrosion, scratches, abrasions etc. as well as improve overall aesthetic appeal of the can.
Metal Decoration coatings therefore can be broadly divided in two categories : -
- EXTERNAL COATINGS
- INTERNAL COATINGS
EXTERNAL COATINGS
Perhaps the most important factor contributing to the popularization of metal cans in packaging today, is extraordinary external appeal a canned pack provides apart from the strength to preserve contents.
The external aesthetic appeal is primarily by the proper use of External Metal Decoration Coatings, which adds colour, gloss and smoothness of finish.
External Decoration of cans generally consists of following application sequences :
- Size
- Base Coat
- Inks
- Top Coat Varnishes.
SizeCoat : These are mostly Vinyl, Alkyd or Epoxy based unpigmented solutions in volatile solvents. A thin layer of size applied and curved at proper thickness and proper temperature improves the overall performance of the whole External decoration system in terms of adhesion and tooling properties. Thus where the metal fabrication involves severe draw, a size coat is highly recommended.
BaseCoat : Base coat provides an opaque, smooth and flexible base for subsequent ink passes. It is the base coat therefore often decides the quality of the printed image on the can. The base coat therefore must posses good opacity, colour, colour retention, adhesion and flexibility to take up subsequent ink passes without loosing tooling flexibility or varnish adhesion.
TopCoat : Top coat Varnishes are required to protect the underlying layers of inks and base coat from damage during fabrication and imparting gloss to the external decoration system.
INTERNAL COATINGS
It is needless to mention that coatings for inside of the containers are highly specialized coating. These coatings are required to protect the metal of the container from the chemical attack by the content and at the same time prevent metal contamination of the contents. The coatings again must not alter the properties of the contents.
In case of food cans it is most important to ensure that the coating does not react with the contents and alter the flavour. It has to be non-toxic.
COATING PARAMETERS
STORAGE : Lacquer, coatings, varnishes, etc. should be stored before use at 30 +5 degree Celsius. This will ensure standard working viscosity and eliminate any possibility of application difficulties.
VISCOSITY : Viscosity is measured at 30 degree Celsius and is expressed in seconds in a No.4 Ford cup.
The viscosity of all products are correctly adjusted before dispatch and in most cases to figures that give suitable application properties. The products, which require a reduction, have appropriate information entered in their respective data-sheets. Viscosity rises of product while in use be rectified by addition of appropriate thinners as stated in the respective data sheets. This will ensure consistent application.
FILM MEASUREMENT :
Dry film measurement is expressed in terms of weight in grams per square inch of metal decoration coating and collapsible tube coating, and in terms of thickness in microns for spraying qualities.
BAKING :
Baking schedule of metal decorating products are quoted as the time at which the quoted metal is the stated temperature. This should not be confused with the total time in the oven air temperature.
F. D. A (Food and Drug Administration) :
Products, particularly internal coating products are made from F.D.A. approved raw material in their respective data-sheets.
