The history of Shalimar Paints is the history of the paint industry in India and South-East Asia. Shalimar Paint Color & Varnish Company was established in 1902 in Howrah, West Bengal by two Britishers - A N Turner and A N Wright. In the same year, the company set-up a large-scale manufacturing plant in Howrah, the first such plant in entire South-East Asia.

Rapidly expanding presence and reach, Shalimar soon became the country’s leading paint brand. India’s iconic structures like Rashtrapati Bhavan, Howrah Bridge, Vidyasagar Setu, Salt Lake Stadium, continue to use Shalimar Paints. With access to high-end technology in the industrial coatings segment, Shalimar Paints pioneered aviation coatings, marine paints and the painting of thermal power plants.

gautam-kanjilal Mr. Gautam Kanjilal

Mr. Gautam Kanjilal holds post graduate degree in Economics. Started his career as a Probationary Officer in July 1972 at State Bank of India. In his more than 37 years of service in SBI, he handled many important administrative and business assignments covering a large matrix of banking operations, including credit management and forex. He was also posted at the corporate headquarters of SBI Capital Markets Ltd, the merchant banking arm of SBI, where his responsibilities covered project finance, debt syndication and handling capital issues. Among the important assignments he subsequently held in SBI were as AGM (Planning), Kolkata, Dy. General Manager (Accounts & Compliance) at SBI’s Corporate Centre, Mumbai, Chief Executive Officer of SBI’s New York operations, General Manager (Mid-Corporate), Kolkata and lastly as Chief General Manager, Delhi Circle, from which post he superannuated in September 2009.

alok-perti Mr. Alok Perti

Mr. Alok Perti holds a master’s degree in physics. Mr. Perti has also completed a master’s course in Social Planning & Policy in Developing Countries from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He joined Indian Administrative Service in 1977 and has worked in various capacities with the Central Government and the Assam Government. He was on the board of several Defence PSUs as official director, where he worked as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Defence. He was also Official director on the board of CIL and NLC when he was serving in the Ministry of Coal. He was also chairman of the Expert Appraisal Committee of the Ministry of Environment and Forest for Hydro-electric and river projects. Apart from this he is also the Director General of the Indian Association of Ammonium Nitrate Manufacturers. Presently he is on the board of IIFCL Projects Ltd, which is a PSU.

Ashok Kumar Gupta is the Director at Shalimar Paints, India’s leading and most iconic paint manufacturer. In his role at the organization, Mr. Ashok Gupta oversees the overall operations of the brand while also framing successful growth strategies for the brand. Holding a Master’s degree in Physics and PGDBA, Mr. Ashok Gupta is an industry veteran with over three decades of experience in leadership positions at reputed organizations including SAIL, Jindal Industries, Surya Roshni, Arcelor Mittal etc., specializing in driving business transformation, growth, and profitability. While at Jindal Stainless, Mr. Ashok Gupta was deeply involved in turning the company around from a loss-making unit to a profitable business. His expertise was once again brought to the fore at APL Apollo Tubes Limited, an INR 9,000 crore company, where he recently served as the Managing Director. Under his leadership, APL Apollo Tubes Limited has consistently grown at a CAGR of 20%. Over the years, the company has grown from 2.5 lac tons facility to over 25 lac tons facility.Mr. Ashok Gupta joined Shalimar Paints in June 2018. Under his guidance the Company witnessed an impressive turnaround and led a successful rights issue worth INR 200 crore. These funds, made available as working capital, have helped Shalimar Paints become EBITDA positive in the current financial year and register a year-on-year business growth of more than 30%.Mr. Gupta’s expertise lies in bringing about business transformation by carefully developing strategies that fits best in the interest of the company. He has a sharp financial and business acumen and also a great ability to take the team together.

surender-kumar Mr. Sanjay Kumar Gupta

Mr. Sanjay Kumar Gupta is a Fellow member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) & Insurance Institute of India (III) and Associate member of The Institute of Cost & Management Accountants of India (ICMA) & The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). He is also alumnus of the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Delhi University. He has over 25 years of experience in leadership roles across functions in diverse industries like Steel, Financial Services, Housing & Urban infrastructure Finance etc. He is currently associated with Jindal United Steel Ltd as Chief Financial Officer. He had held leadership roles with Jindal Stainless Ltd., Tata Motors Finance Ltd. & HUDCO. His areas of expertise includes Corporate & Business Finance, Treasury, Financial Planning & Analysis, Corporate Taxation, Risk Management and Strategic assignments of M&A, restructuring for turnaround of companies etc.

surender-kumar Mr. Ashok Kumar Agarwal

Mr. Ashok Kumar Agarwal, former General Manager of Indian Railways, retired in June 2016 after more than 38 years of service. He graduated with a Bachelors in Mechanical engineering after qualifying in the prestigious Special Class Railway Apprentice Examination in 1973. He has more than 38 years of experience with Indian Railways in various fields like Production, Planning, Man and Asset Management, Workshop Management, Materials Management, Inventory Management, Budgetary control, Transfer of Technology, export of locos and coaches, R&D. His last assignment was with Integral Coach Factory, Chennai as General Manager. Prior to the posting as General Manager, he was heading the Indian Railway Organization for Alternate Fuels (IROAF) of Indian Railways as Chief Administrative Officer. Before that, as Chief Mechanical Engineer – East Coast Railway, Bhubaneswar he managed the highest loading zone in Indian Railways; Chief Mechanical Engineer, Diesel Loco Modernisation, Patiala and Divisional Railway Manager, Bhopal. Mr Agarwal has also worked in various capacities in Railway Board, New Delhi; RITES Ltd., Gurgaon and Research, Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow. Throughout his career, Mr. Agarwal has displayed great leadership qualities and managerial skills which has enabled him to deliver results in crisis situations.

surender-kumar Ms. Shruti Shrivastava

Ms. Shruti Shrivastava (née Kanodia), holds a B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) degree from National Law School of India University, Bengaluru with a gold medal. She is a practicing corporate lawyer with approximately 12 years of experience. She started her career with S&R Associates, New Delhi and then moved on to Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, New Delhi where she was a partner in the corporate and M&A practice since 2016. She has significant experience in general corporate advisory including senior management employment, mergers & acquisitions, private equity and venture capital transactions, debt and equity financing for both listed and unlisted companies and restructuring of businesses. She is currently leading Sagus Legal, a legal advisory firm.

R & D

Shalimar Paints believes in paint innovations that protect infrastructure and assets, and enrich consumers' home lives. The company pioneered industrial coatings technology in India with several industry firsts such as high build zinc coatings, radiation resistant coatings for nuclear power plants, polyurethane paint for fighter aircraft and railway coaches, among others.

Recognizing the importance of R&D, the company set up its first R&D centre in Howrah, West Bengal in 1902. This centre holds the distinction of being the first Indian in-house R&D unit to get recognized by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Govt of India, in 1979. To keep pace with the company’s growth and expansion, it set up its second R&D centre spread over 10,000 ft, in Nashik, Maharashtra in 2009.

Distribution Network

Shalimar Paints has a pan-India sales and distribution network. With 30+ depots, the company services more than 5,000 dealers across the country.

The company strongly believes that service is the key in paints business. For greater distribution efficiency and improved customer service, the company has 4 redistribution centres - in East (Howrah), West (Bhiwandi), North (Sikandrabad) and South (Chennai) zones of the country. With more regional distribution centres in the pipeline, Shalimar Paints is poised to provide superior customer service all over India. 


Manufacturing Facilities

Shalimar Paints set up South-East Asia’s first ever large-scale manufacturing plant in 1902 in Howrah, West Bengal. As the company expanded its footprint across India, it established its second manufacturing unit in Nashik, Maharashtra in 1992 to cater to the Western region.

With the growing demand from the Northern region, Shalimar Paints set up its third manufacturing facility in Sikandrabad, U.P. in 2002. Both, decorative and industrial paint products are manufactured at the plants.

To serve the southern market and strengthen its product portfolio, the company has set up a greenfield plant in Chennai catering the ever expanding product line meeting the new requirements of the market.
